Commissions include the hide mural at Mersehead RSPB reserve, the visitor centre mural at Lochwinnoch RSPB reserve, Commissioned paintings for RSPB Scotland; mural and illustrations for the National Trust for Scotland; the bird illustrations at the Mull of Galloway visitor centre for Scottish Natural Heritage; illustrations and designs for interpretation boards and leaflets for Dumfries and Galloway Council and card designs for RSPB, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the World Wide Fund for Nature. From the apparent permanence of the rocks in the bay and their attendant oystercatchers to the fragility of the frosts and snows or the transience of the warblers on blackthorn blossom the motive fro virtually all my art is to celebrate the natural world and to hope that others may also turn to look and find inspiration there. I paint that which stops me in my tracks, jolts me out of introspection, compels me to follow an idea on which my heart can soar; a pattern of shelduck, the warm glow of curlew, the urgency of redshank, the reflected stillness of a winter’s afternoon, the light of tides. To be halted in such a way is nature’s method of communicating something sacred to me. May my art be the conduit that communicates that message to others. Rockcliffe March 2003 2007 was a significant year for local artist John Threlfall. He was elected a full member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, won the coveted Swarovski/Birdwatch 'Bird Artist of the Year' award and his first book 'Between The Tides' was published. |
