Jim Whitworth

Woodcarver & Sculptor

Born in Oldam Lancs. 1949.

Jim trained as a teacher at Newcastle upon Tyne, but 3 years working for the British Antarctic Survey & Fence Riding in Argentina cured him of the teaching idea. In 1973 Jim visited Langdale for a weekend of climbing & simply forgot to go home, and has worked and lived in the Ambleside area ever since.

Jim's Mother still has his first carving from the age of 8 years old, a Cotton Bobbin with a face. Over the years he has carved more and more & by 1994 it had got completely out of hand and working 17 years for the national trust was enough. Jim bought a truck, fitted a workshop in the back and now travels all over Britain during the summer selling work by the roadside, and through galleries which meet his requirements.
