Alison Johnston

Alison Johnston was born in Dumfries in 1961. Archie Sutter Watt was a great inspiration since he taught her both at primary and secondary school. He was the springboard for her continued education at Edinburgh College of Art under the tuition of Elizabeth Blackadder. Following graduation from Art College her career flourished, at first in the line of illustration and animation for Oscar nominated “Fireman Sam” “Aardman Animations” and Rolf Harris. She now paints full time from her studios in New Abbey and Somerset. She also runs painting courses and life drawing classes for adults.

Alison is a very experienced and prolific worker, and her canvases are instantly engaging. She is able to celebrate her surroundings and transform them into paintings with careful study of colour, light and texture.” I draw and paint many watercolour studies from life. These I call upon to paint the finished pieces in my studio. I often paint on handmade canvas because there is something very special about starting a painting from the very basic raw materials, canvas and wood. Stretching and priming is all part of the preparation before applying the creative brushstrokes.. I am often working on several canvases at once, allowing the paint to dry slightly at various stages. My surroundings offer an unlimited source of inspiration”.

She has had many successful exhibitions, and commissions include Dire Straits and The Royal Bank of Scotland.
