John Busby
RSW, SWLA, Elected full RSA 2005 Born in Bradford, 1928 John spent his childhood in Wharfdale, and was a junior member of the Wharfdale Naturalists’ Society at its foundation. He learned much about nature from Walter Flesher, the gamekeeper on Burley Moor and Romany on Children’s Hour, and enjoyed the wartime freedom to explore and cycle for miles on traffic free roads. John began his studies at Leeds College of Art, but was interupted by national service in the RAF. He resumed his studies at Leeds in 1948, to NDD, and then moved to Edinburgh College of Art under William Gilles for two years, followed by Postgraduate and Travelling Scholarships, visiting France and Italy for nine months. He joined Edinburgh College of Art in 1956 and taught drawing and painting for over thirty years, until 1988. Past president of the Society of Scottish Artists. Elected member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society (1982), and Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy 1987. Founder Member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, and active council member on several occasions. |
