Donald Wilkinson

Donald Wilkinson was born in 1937 in a cottage in Keswick with the river Greta flowing past the bottom of the garden. From 1953-57 he studied painting at the College of Art in Carlisle and, after National Service from 1959-62, at the Royal College of Art in London where Julian Trevelyan encouraged him, and where he was awarded the Andrew J. Lloyd scholarship for landscape

“My first experiences of working in the landscape
were of being on the side of Latrigg and attempting
to draw the views over the lake towards Borrowdale
and up to Helvellen. This activity has played a big part
in my life since before I was a student. In the early
drawings my main concern was to get the shapes
‘right’, it was only through continued involvement
that I began to realise what I wanted from the
landscape - what to put down and what to leave
out - what it is that gives a place its essence.”
